07 August 2024
On 29 July, a mass stabbing incident targeting children at a dance studio in the northern English town of Southport, Merseyside resulted in the deaths of three young girls and ten people injured. Disinformation and false narratives regarding the nationality and religion of the assailant were widely circulated on social media, particularly within far-right channels.

Widespread Civil Unrest Across England and Northern Ireland
Riots orchestrated by far-right groups have now spread to various towns and cities across the UK. Violent confrontations between far-right demonstrators, the police, and counter-protesters have been reported in London, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Liverpool, Hartlepool, Belfast, and numerous other locations. Far-right channels have called for more protests across the country with reports indicating as many as 30 demonstrations will be held across the country on 7 August. There have been multiple reports of far-right protesters attacking ethnic minorities, with information trending on social media indicating that they are seeking to attack immigration offices, the offices of immigration lawyers, and charities across the country.
In response to the riots, the UK government has convened two emergency COBRA meetings and is considering investigating the worst actions as potential terror crimes. 6,000 riot police, representing 30 per cent of the UK’s total force, have been mobilised to counter the disorder. There is a realistic possibility that the geographic spread of the disorder and the variety of sites targeted by the far-right will overstretch police forces.
Several countries, including Nigeria, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the UAE and Australia have issued travel alerts for the UK, warning of anti-immigrant protests and the threat of targeted attacks against ethnic minorities or foreigners.
